Celebrations in Santiago include a few religious festivals, the most known is The Patronales de Santiago Apostol
(Patron saint's day) on July 25, and the Grito de Separaciòn de Panama de Colombia (the town' call for Independence from Colombia
on November 9).
Sights:
If you happen to be around it is interesting to see how lively churches in Panama can get on given day.
La escuela Normal Superior Juan D. Arsemena (Avenida % Norte, is an imposing teachers' college and a pretty much the
proud symbol of Santiago. It is worth a quick look if you 're in the neighborhood, which is re-tile roof, but waht will grab
your attention is the flamboyantly ornate entrance, which feature nudes frolickling up the columns and across the arch.
Visitors are welcome to peek inside, where there are more ornate columns and across. The halla threater with murals painted
By Roberto Lewis, the famous Panamanian artist who also painted the ceiling of the Teatro Nacional en Panama city.
Santiago does have the facilities and bus connections one would expect of a growing Panamanian town life, some entertainment,
possibilities. It's a good place to choose for the starting point on cross-country trips, as we had have travelers
being doing...
Such as, to Montijo (Puerto Mutis):
The road to Montijo is not well marked. To get there by car, follow Avenida Central toward the Cathedral and take the
left fork once you reach it. Turn left behind the church onto Calle 2 norte. Take the second right (It's avenida 5B Sur, but
it's not marked) and then stay straight all the way to Puerto Mutis.
Puerto Mutis is 24 kilometers southwest of Santiago on a good road and it easly accesible fromSantiago by bus or taxi.
The town is just a few houses, hole in the wall restaurant, gas stations and shops lining the road.
Cañazas:
26 kms. from Santiago.
La Mesa: 27 kms. from Santiago.
Las Palmas: 77 kms. from Santiago.
Santiago: 250 kms. from Panama City.
Sport and recreation:
santiago's de facto port, Puerto Mutis (Mootees) is a jumping off point for boat to Coiba. Some sport fishing and diving
operations still operate out of here, through Santa Catalina is supplanting it as the port of choice. It's also possible to
work out cheap trips to Coiba with local fisherman (risky proposition).
